The opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party wants the government to reconsider land policies that will protect landowners.
Sharon Arach, the UPC spokesperson, on Thursday said once the new policy is introduced, this will reduce the current rising land grabbing.
She notes that several families in Uganda are unable to efficiently engage in farming due to land grabbing caused by the current tenure system.
“When you look closely, you notice most of the poverty alleviation programs by the government revolve around agriculture, and yet the government has not done much to ensure that every Ugandan has a plot of land to effectively get them out of poverty,” Arach added.
Arach’s remarks come a few days after Uganda hosted the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), which runs from 9th to 11th January 2025 in Kampala, under the theme, “Building resilient Agric-food systems in Africa.”
CAADP aims at increasing food security and nutrition, reducing rural poverty, creating employment, and contributing to economic development while safeguarding the environment.
