The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has announced key resolutions arising from its Extraordinary National Council meeting, including the reaffirmation of Jimmy Akena as Party President and the establishment of a 14-day consultative period for delegates to submit proposals.

Addressing journalists at a press conference on Wednesday, June 17th, 2026, at Uganda House, the party Spokesperson Sharon Arach Oyat said the five-week meeting concluded successfully on Saturday, June 13th, 2026.

She stated that the Council recognised Akena as the Party President by law and fact in accordance with the party constitution.

“Any person who has carried him as the party leader shall be individually responsible for their harmful actions unless he or she has been given that mandate by the party leader’s conference, through the rightful process,” Oyat said.

The Council adopted and forwarded the party president’s report on the status of the party to the delegates’ conference for further discussion.

It also resolved that the party leadership must safeguard the party flag, logos, symbols, and documents from abuse and take decisive action against individuals who misuse them.

The matter was referred to the delegates’ conference for consideration of appropriate penalties.

Oyat noted that the party will continue cooperating with the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue and engaging with key political actors in pursuit of the common good of the country.

She added that the National Council established a 14-day consultative period during which delegates may submit recommendations and proposals in written, video, or audio format to the Office of the Secretary-General.

The submissions will be compiled into a report and presented to the delegates’ conference for consideration.

Oyat said the resolutions are intended to strengthen party structures and safeguard its integrity following the challenges experienced during the 2026 general election.
