The Judiciary of Uganda held its second National Court Open Day, marking a significant step toward greater transparency, accountability, and access to justice for all citizens.
Held on 15th December 2025, at Kololo Independence Grounds under the theme ‘Enhancing Judicial Accountability and Access to Justice,’ the event offered citizens a rare opportunity to engage directly with judicial officers and learn more about court procedures.
The day started with a ceremonial procession led by Principal Judge Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, moving from the Judiciary Headquarters to the Kololo grounds.
In her opening address, Principal Judge Abodo emphasized the event’s purpose.
“Our goal today is to create a safe and open space for free interaction between the public and judicial officers. We are opening our doors to listen to you, engage with you, and account to you,” Lady Justice Abodo said.
Representing the Chief Justice, Deputy Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija highlighted the constitutional mandate of the judiciary and the importance of public accountability.
“The powers we wield come from you, the people of Uganda. We have a responsibility to account for our actions, and you have the right to inquire into areas where we fall short,” Dr. Zeija stated.”
The Open Day featured interactive exhibition stalls from key justice institutions, including the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the Judiciary’s administrative arms, and other judicial representatives.
Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, John Baptist Asiimwe, highlighted the importance of public involvement in legal processes, noting that it guarantees accountability and transparency in the justice system.
“When citizens are actively involved, justice is not just delivered; it is visible, understood, and trusted by the people we serve,” DDPP Asiimwe noted.
The interactive activities allowed attendees to ask questions, share feedback, and better understand how Uganda’s courts operate, building public trust in the justice system.
Through initiatives like the National Court Open Day, the Judiciary demonstrates its commitment to transparency, public engagement, strengthened partnerships across the justice sector, and the creation of a justice system that serves and earns the trust of every Ugandan.
