The People’s Front for Freedom(PFF) party Deputy President in Charge of Buganda, Bayiga Lulume, has criticized Thembo Nyombi, the Executive Director(ED) of the Uganda Communication Commission (UCC), for failing to use his authority to openly condemn the recent closure of the Nation Media Group by the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
According to Lulume, Nyombi should resign because he has failed to utilize his position and legitimate authority to halt lawlessness against the media fraternity.
“We demand that the Executive Director of the Uganda Communication Commission should resign or cause a crisis meeting in government to ensure that the power that has been taken away from him is reinstated so that he can do his work without interference from the army,” Lulume said.ng
While addressing the members of the press on Monday, June 29th, 2026, at the party headquarters on Katonga Road in Kampala, Lulume noted that Nyombi should ask his appointing authority to intervene to restore his power and start the process of returning the Nation Media Group to the air.
Lulume’s resignation demand comes after Nyombi went silent for hours after the closure of NTV Uganda, Daily Monitor, and its partners. However, in his recent statement on his official Twitter handle, Nyombi urged Ugandans to remain calm to allow further investigation into the matter.
However, netizens have since criticized his tweet, revealing that it exposed his innocence of the war against the freedom of the press in the house he presides over, something that indicates a lack of accountability.
“Consultations have begun with the relevant government stakeholders to obtain verified information. The Commission urges the public to remain calm and allow these consultations to proceed. We will provide further updates as appropriate once the consultations conclude,” Nyombi said.
Gen Muhoozi ordered the military shutdown of NTV Uganda because he accused the station and its parent company of publishing “bad stories” targeting Uganda’s top leadership and persistently misreporting on President Yoweri Museveni.
Nonetheless, Gen Muhoozi has agreed in principle to reopen NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor soon, but no exact date has been set as negotiations and final approvals are still underway.
Meanwhile, PFF said that it will continue to update the nation on the need to protect the people’s human rights as enshrined in the constitution, adding that the government should release the Party President Erias Lukwago, Dr. Kizza Besigye, and other alleged political prisoners.
