NRM Primaries: Tayebwa to Defend Ruhinda North Seat in 2026 Elections

Tayebwa commended the peaceful nature of the process and described it as a reflection of political maturity and unity in Mitooma.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon Thomas Tayebwa has officially been nominated in the race to become the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for the Ruhinda North Constituency seat in Mitooma District, ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The nomination exercise started on Monday, June 16, 2025 at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala.

Speaking shortly after being nominated on Tuesday, Tayebwa commended the peaceful nature of the process and described it as a reflection of political maturity and unity in Mitooma.

“This shows the importance of unity with purpose because we are serving our people. Mitooma is already moving in the right direction. I’m hopeful that this spirit of peaceful competition continues across the country,” Tayebwa said.

However, he also acknowledged the presence of other contenders in the race but assured that the campaigns in Ruhinda North would remain calm and respectful.

“I have friends I will be competing with, and we are going to have an exciting race. We promise a peaceful campaign that will follow the rules of the NRM, and we shall respect the outcome once the people have spoken,” Tayebwa explained.

Known for his expressiveness in Parliament and his growing reputation as a statesman, Tayebwa’s nomination is backed by what he explained as the role of collaborative leadership in delivering services to the constituency.

“When leaders work together, we set a good example for the rest of the country,” he added.

He was nominated alongside nominated alongside the Mitooma District Woman MP, Agasha Juliet and the District Chairman (LCV), Benon Karyeija.

Tayebwa has served as the Member of Parliament for Ruhinda North since 2016 and currently holds the position of Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

The NRM primaries are expected to be highly competitive as the ruling party prepares for the 2026 general elections.
