MANCHESTER UNITED STRENGTHEN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE BID WITH HARD-FOUGHT 2–1 VICTORY OVER BRENTFORD AT OLD TRAFFORD

Benjamin Šeško and Bruno Fernandes celebrate United’s second goal at Old Trafford

Manchester United strengthened their push for UEFA Champions League qualification with a 2–1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday night, combining early attacking efficiency with resilient defending to secure a crucial three points.

United set the tone early, breaking the deadlock in the 11th minute when Casemiro rose highest to power home a header from a corner delivered by captain Bruno Fernandes, after a flick-on from Harry Maguire. The hosts-maintained control and doubled their lead just before the break, with Benjamin Šeško finishing calmly following a sharp attacking move initiated by Amad Diallo and expertly threaded through by Fernandes.

Brentford responded with greater urgency after the interval, forcing United into a more compact defensive shape. Despite sustained pressure, the home side remained organised, with Maguire delivering a commanding performance at the back and goalkeeper Senne Lammens producing key interventions. The visitors eventually found a breakthrough late on when Mathias Jensen struck from distance in the 87th minute, but United held firm through the closing stages.

The result lifts United to third place on 61 points after 34 matches, placing them firmly in contention for a top-five finish and Champions League qualification as the season enters its decisive phase.

Michael Carrick, head coach of Manchester United

Fernandes once again proved central to United’s attacking output, registering his 19th Premier League assist of the campaign leaving him just one short of the all-time single-season record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. With four matches remaining, the Portuguese midfielder is now on the brink of making league history.

Head coach Michael Carrick praised the performance, describing it as “a huge effort from the players,” and highlighting the team’s ability to remain composed under late pressure. Brentford manager Keith Andrews acknowledged his side’s late response but pointed to United’s clinical first-half finishing as decisive.

With fixtures against Liverpool, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton still to come, United remain in a strong position to secure Champions League football. A steady run of results in the remaining matches is expected to be sufficient to confirm qualification.

As the campaign approaches its conclusion, United’s momentum appears well-timed, with performances combining structure, efficiency, and individual quality qualities that could prove decisive in the final stretch of the season.
