Katikkiro of Buganda Visits Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital

The visit serves as a royal gesture signaling the kingdom’s commitment to supporting maternal and neonatal health in the region.

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has paid a courtesy visit to the Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital.

The visit serves as a royal gesture signaling the kingdom’s commitment to supporting maternal and neonatal health in the region.

The Katikkiro was welcomed by the head of the hospital, Dr Evelyn Nabunya, on December 17, 2024, accompanied by the Minister of Health and Social Development, Cotilda Nakate.

During the visit, Katikkiro visited the hospital’s 60-bed private wing, designed to provide enhanced comfort and care for pregnant mothers, postpartum women, and private gynecological patients.

According to Mayiga, the in-depth discussions with medical staff, including doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, reflected the role of the Buganda Kingdom in promoting health awareness and encouraging access to quality healthcare services.

“We urge people to always prioritize health by seeking specialized care whenever necessary, more so for the women and babies; it may seem expensive but worth it after all. When mothers and children are taken good care of, there’s harmony in the family,” Mayiga said.

PM Mayiga listened attentively to their accounts of daily operations, the challenges they encounter, and their dedication to providing quality care despite often limited resources, and emphasized the importance of community support and collaboration in improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

The Katikkiro’s visit provided a valuable opportunity for hospital staff engagement through experience sharing and gaining firsthand insight into the challenges faced by both medical teams and patients.

Mulago Specialized Women and Neonatal Hospital also houses a dedicated oncology section specializing in gynecologic cancers, including ovarian, fallopian tube, uterine, endometrial, cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. He toured various sections of the hospital, including the state-of-the-art newborn wards, preterm neonatal wards, and the newborn critical care unit.
