The Iteso Cultural Union has kicked off a mega campaign targeting redeveloping several tourism sites within the region.

The campaign, dubbed Unveiling the Potential for Tourism within the sub-region, is being conducted by the Iteso Cultural Union in partnership with the Uganda Tourism Board.

Joseph Ojatun, the Deputy Minister for Tourism and Documentation at Teso Cultural Union, said that the campaign targets identifying and marketing potential tourism sites in the area, adding that it will showcase unique cultural heritage, among others.

He said the sites to be redeveloped and marketed are Nyeru Rock Painting in Kumi district, Lakes Opeta and Bisina that harbor several bird species, and Teso Cultural Heritage Site in Katakwi district.

To Ojatun, this particular site is critically historical because it is where every Teso cultural leader, Papa Emor-Imor, is usually installed before assuming the cultural throne.

Brian Edonyu, a tour and travel operator at Loremi Tours and Travels Agency, welcomed the campaign, saying that it would greatly boost tourism activities within the Teso sub-region.

According to Edonyu, who operates between Murchison Falls and Sipi Falls, he is optimistic that once the campaign is well implemented, it will create for them more packages (sites) to offer tourists.

He added that between Murchison Falls and Sipi Falls, they had nothing to show or present to their clients.

In a bid to boost this campaign, the Cultural Union has organized the Teso Symposium, which is underway at the Soroti Regional Museum in Soroti city.

The symposium that kicked off on Friday, July 19, 2024, will present several cultural activities, including campfires, traditional dishes, and dances, to showcase the beautiful cultural heritage of the region.

Teso sub-region consists of Amuria, Bukedea, Kaberamaido, Kapelebyong, Katakwi, Kumi, Ngora, Serere, and Soroti districts.
