The Ministry of Health has issued a fresh warning to Ugandans against self-medication, highlighting its long-term risks, including resistance to prescribed drugs.
At a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre on Wednesday, March 18th, 2026, Emmanuel Ainebyona, the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, emphasized that self-treatment without professional guidance is undermining the effectiveness of standard medicines.
The warning comes ahead of the, scheduled from March 26–28 at the UMA Show Grounds. Now in its fifth edition, the exhibition is Uganda’s largest pharmaceutical and healthcare-focused event, promoting local manufacturing, innovation, and knowledge sharing under the theme: “Strengthening Access, Quality and Sustainability in Health for All.”
Ezra Muhumuza, Managing Director of Uganda Manufacturers Association, noted that local production of medical equipment, reagents, and even vaccines is increasing, reducing dependence on imports while fostering skill development.
Grace Kiwanuka, Chairperson of the Uganda Healthcare Federation, highlighted that self-medication, especially in dental care, delays professional treatment. She emphasized that platforms like the upcoming exhibition will help bridge knowledge gaps, connecting experts, innovators, and the public.
Organizers say the exhibition will showcase a range of medical technologies, equipment, and innovations, offering Ugandans insights into the future of healthcare driven by local capacity and global partnerships.
