Experts Warn of Erectile Dysfunction Drug Dangers After Death of Busia Taxi Driver

Medical experts have long warned that ED drugs can be dangerous, particularly when used by individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or high blood pressure.

The sudden death of 55-year-old taxi driver Muhammad Mukungu in Busia District has raised alarms about the potential dangers of erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs.

Mukungu collapsed and died after reportedly using sex stimulants during a visit to Mwesigwa Guest House in Kisenyi A village on the night of July 8, 2025.

Mukungu checked into the guest house on Tuesday evening with a female companion, but after several hours together, he escorted her out and later returned with a second woman.

It was during this second encounter that Mukungu reportedly collapsed and died. Though police have not yet confirmed the cause of death, initial reports suggest a potential link to ED drugs, which are commonly used by men in their 50s and 60s to combat performance issues.

This tragic incident follows a disturbing trend in the region, where several men in similar age brackets have died under circumstances linked to the use of erectile dysfunction medications like Sildenafil (Viagra), Tadalafil (Cialis), and Avanafil (Stendra).

Notably, prominent figures, including local businessmen and Dr Spire, have also passed away in similar circumstances.

Erectile Dysfunction drugs interact with certain medications, such as nitrates, and cause adverse effects. They interact with medications in potentially harmful ways, especially those affecting blood pressure, blood flow, or hormone levels.

Some aphrodisiacs, like yohimbine, can interact with medications for hypertension or heart conditions.

Additionally, certain herbs, such as ginkgo biloba, may interact with blood thinners. It is crucial to consult a healthcare professional before using any aphrodisiac, particularly if one is taking other medications.

Dr Richard Niyetegyeka, a prominent physician at Ricar Medical Hub, says that it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional before using any substances or supplements to discuss potential risks and interactions.

Prima Najjuko, a nurse at Mulago hospital disclosed that the use of ED drugs is becoming more widespread, especially among older men partly due to societal pressures surrounding masculinity and sexual performance.

She admits that there is a growing trend where older men feel the need to perform at levels similar to younger men, sometimes because of external pressures or their own insecurities.

“This culture of over-performance is potentially leading to dangerous misuse of these medications,” Najjuko says.

In addition to the dangers posed by ED drugs, experts also point to unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as excessive sugar consumption, which can exacerbate erectile dysfunction.
