Two Drivers Arrested for Overloading Buses Transporting Pupils for School Tour

The Uganda Traffic police has arrested and detained two school bus drivers for dangerously overloading buses transporting pupils of St. Kizito Primary School for a tour.

The Public Relations Officer at the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, SP Michael Kananura who posted on his X account said that the two drivers were apprehended on Friday morning, July 17th, 2026, at Golf Course towards Fairway traffic lights in Kampala during a traffic operation.

“The two drivers have since been charged with the relevant traffic offenses and are currently detained at Kampala CPS pending appearance before court and Police is working with the school management to ensure pupils are safely transported to their destination using appropriate means of transport,” Kananura said.

Kananura also noted that police are also working with other stakeholders on improving the safety of school transportation after a series of fatal accidents.

“Police together with other key stakeholders is working on the guidelines aimed at improving the safety of school transportation to minimize the increasing number of road crashes involving school children. This will be communicated in due course once the consultative process is concluded,” Kananura added.

Kananura remarks come after a school bus carrying pupils from a road trip had a fatal road traffic crash that occurred on Thursday, July 16th, 2026, at Chekwatit village, Kimawa parish, Kawowo sub-county, Kapchorwa district, where a total of 21 people, comprising 20 pupils and a school Director, were confirmed dead.

The crash involved an Isuzu bus, registration number UA 108BQ, belonging to King David Junior School, Ndejje in Makindye division, Kampala. The driver has not yet been identified.

Earlier this month on July 10th, 2026, a passenger train was involved in an accident with a bus transporting students of Mwebaza High School who were headed to Jinja on a study trip, leaving a teacher dead and several others injured.

On Tuesday, July 9th, 2026, a bus driver was killed and 15 people, most of them being secondary school students, were injured after a school bus rammed into a stationary trailer along the Mbale–Iganga Highway in Bugweri district.

On July 7th, 2026, 15 people were killed and 28 others injured in a head-on collision involving an Opit Travelers bus and a trailer along the Kampala-Gulu highway in Omoro district.

With the recent tragedies in less than 10 days, the police continues to ask motorists to drive safely and always consider road safety first as most accidents have been as a result of human negligence.
