Rwanda is set to bring Formula One racing back to Africa after securing a 10-year agreement to host the African Grand Prix at a new circuit in Bugesera, starting in the early 2030s.

Formula One announced the agreement, with the race to be presented by Visit Rwanda, marking the sport’s return to the continent for the first time since 1993.

The inaugural race will take place once a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera is complete. The track will be developed to meet Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Grade 1 standards, required for hosting Formula One races.

The project, led by the Rwanda Development Board, forms part of a wider initiative aimed at boosting sports, tourism, infrastructure and commercial development.

Formula One said the agreement follows years of collaboration to establish the necessary foundations for a sustainable, world-class Grand Prix.

The return of the sport to Africa is expected to put Rwanda on the global motorsport stage while creating opportunities to promote tourism and investment.

The race is scheduled for the early 2030s, subject to the completion of the new circuit.
