National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has officially declared his intention to contest for the party’s presidential flag bearer position ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Kyagulanyi returned his expression of interest forms on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule, where he addressed the press and party supporters.
“Today, I responded to the call of the party Secretary General and expressed my interest in becoming the NUP presidential flag bearer. It’s not because I seek respect or a high position, but because of the unfinished journey to liberate Ugandans,” Kyagulanyi said.
He called on party members and supporters to rally behind him and reaffirmed his commitment to represent them with dignity and resilience.
“I am here to humbly ask for your support to carry the party flag in the coming elections. If given the flag, I promise I will not shame you. I believe we can take on President Museveni. I feel it within me; we can defeat him if we remain united and protect our vote,” he added.
As the 2026 general elections draw closer, political parties across the country are engaging in internal processes to select their respective presidential candidates.
According to Dr Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, President Yoweri Museveni is expected to pick expression of interest forms for the party’s chairperson and presidential flag bearer positions on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Meanwhile, other parties have also made strides in preparing for the polls. The Democratic Party (DP) has already endorsed party president Norbert Mao as its flag bearer.
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has received expressions of interest from several members but has yet to decide on its presidential candidate.
The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) is scheduled to hold a delegates’ conference in August 2025 to determine its flag bearer.
The stage is slowly being set for what is expected to be a highly contested and politically significant 2026 general election.
