The Uganda Law Society (ULS), in conjunction with the Uganda Muslim Lawyers’ Association, has held a Duwa (prayer) for the former Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago at his residence in Wakaliga Village, Lubaga, calling for the restoration of the rule of law and constitutionalism.

Addressing the gathering on Wednesday, July 15th, 2026, Dr. Lulume Bayiga said the Radical New Bar had changed the narrative at a time when the legal profession had become a subject of public disgust among the masses. He urged lawyers to restore integrity within their profession so that honour returns to the legal field.

“The Radical New Bar is the only curtain left between good governance and the abductions that we are facing. If the Radical New Bar ceases to exist, they are going to devour us like chapattis,” Bayiga said.

Herbert Wasswa Birigwa, the National Chairman of the People’s Front for Freedom, described the “Museveni regime” as relying on fear and weapons to control the masses. He affirmed solidarity with Lukwago and warned against remaining silent in the face of transgressions.

Anthony Asiimwe read a statement from ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde, who condemned executive interference in judicial matters and drew parallels between the 1972 abduction of Chief Justice Ben Kiwanuka and current events.

Ssemakadde called on the judiciary to defend its independence and urged lawyers to stand on the side of justice rather than power.

Amina Acola, the Coordinator of Section 3C Committee, said the committee was established to protect lawyers in the course of their work.

“This is our joint fight. Standing with Hon. Lukwago right now is a debt that we owe to him because he has stood there for us,” she said.

The gathering reaffirmed its commitment to resisting lawlessness, protecting human rights, and ensuring that lawyers continue speaking out against abductions, torture, and violations of constitutional order.

Participants prayed for the restoration of the rule of law, judicial independence, and an end to the current climate of fear and impunity.

The event formed part of broader ULS efforts under the Radical New Bar to uphold constitutionalism and defend the legal profession amid ongoing challenges.
