After a long period of deliberation, President Museveni has appointed Michael Atingi-Ego as the new governor, deputized by Prof Augustus Nuwagaba.

Atingi-Ego, who held the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda position since 2020, now finds himself faced with a new role in the world of checks and balances.

The 60-year-old’s appointment comes after the passing of Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, who served as the Governor of the Bank of Uganda from 2001 until his death on January 23, 2022. Mutebile was a renowned economist and played a crucial role in shaping Uganda’s economic landscape during his tenure.

Atingi-Ego’s experience and expertise will be invaluable in his new role as governor. As Deputy Governor, he played a crucial role in shaping the bank’s policies and strategies.

His deputy, Augustus Nuwagaba, a respected economist and consultant in economic transformation, assumes the position of deputy governor. Nuwagaba has been instrumental in advising on Uganda’s economic growth strategies and poverty alleviation programs.

Together the duo will work hand in hand to fill in the interests and the mandate of the bank.

This development is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s economic landscape, and market watchers will be keenly observing the new leadership’s moves.
