President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has confirmed the decision to interface with the top leadership of the opposition Uganda People’s Congress Party in an attempt to end what he termed as ideological mistakes.

While addressing Lango leaders during his assessment tour of the Parish Development Uganda held at Kwania District headquarters, Museveni thanked Ugandans for rejecting the politics of sectarianism that was promoted by the old political parties, which include UPC and the Democratic Party.

He urged Ugandans to continue disciplining this group whenever they try to bring back the bad politics of sectarianism.

“These old political parties will have to be serious and deal with the issues about our people, but if they don’t do it, we shall have to expose them. I will discuss these mistakes with Hon. Jimmy Akena, the UPC party president, and Minister Betty Amongi on these issues. You, the people of Uganda, will have to continue disciplining this group because the 1971 mistake could have been avoided,” President Museveni said.

According to President Museveni, the old political parties should focus on the social and economic transformation of the local people.

“When you see me going to villages mobilizing people, it is because we need to cause socioeconomic transformation among our people. If you obstruct us, we oppose you; our complaint about UPC and DP is that you can’t go about making mistakes, and we keep solving them,” President Museveni said.

The President noted that the old political parties should focus on the issues of developing the people of Uganda.

While delivering his warning to UPC party leaders, Betty Among, the Minister of Gender, Labor, and Social Development, who is also the wife of UPC party president Jimmy Akena Obote, was in attendance.

He immediately asked elder UPC supporters who were in attendance for a photo moment before asking Minister Betty Among to ensure that she takes the members, including Jimmy Akena Obote, for a special meeting.

“Minister Betty Amongi should bring these UPC members and Jimmy Akena so that I can ask them to pay NRM for solving historical mistakes that UPC and DP caused. They get a problem, and we keep solving,” Museveni said.

Regarding wealth creation, President Museveni tasked leaders of the Lango sub-region to ensure that they prioritize wealth creation.

“I always advise you, the leaders of Uganda, to talk about development but with strict priority on wealth creation. Poverty and wealth are private, but development is public. You are all here in the meeting, but when you go back, you will find your poverty waiting for you to welcome you,” Museveni said.
This was the third of PDM’s assessment tours of the region.
