The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk has expressed concern over reports of arrests and detentions of opposition members in Zambia before and after the country’s general election held on August 13th, 2026.

In a statement issued on August 19th, 2026, Türk said all arrests and resulting court proceedings must fully comply with international human rights standards as well as Zambian domestic law, regardless of the gravity of the alleged conduct or the specific charges filed against individuals.

He urged the Zambian authorities to stop arresting people arbitrarily and to fully uphold the due process rights of all those detained.

Türk stressed that every detainee must be notified at the time of their arrest of the reasons for the arrest and promptly informed of any charges against them. They must also be allowed access to legal representation of their choice, as well as the ability to communicate with their families.

The High Commissioner further emphasized that detainees must be treated humanely while in custody and brought promptly before a judge.

In addition, they noted that they must have access to effective remedies for any violations of their fundamental rights that may have occurred during the arrest or detention process.

“At this critical post-election juncture, it is essential to uphold respect for human rights and ensure that any grievances arising from the election are voiced and addressed peacefully, and in accordance with international human rights law,” Türk stated.

The statement comes at a sensitive moment following the recent general election. Türk underlined that the protection of civil and political rights remains vital to maintaining public confidence in the electoral process and ensuring long-term stability.

He called on all relevant institutions to act in full accordance with both national legislation and Zambia’s international human rights obligations.

The High Commissioner’s intervention highlights the importance of due process guarantees and the peaceful resolution of any post-election disputes.
