The leaders of Busoga sub region have asked the government to consider an affirmative action program to accelerate the war against the high poverty rate in the area.

This was contained in a joint memorandum presented to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Thursday, January 23rd, 2025, during the Busoga leaders meeting held at Mayuge District Headquarters’ ground.

The meeting aimed at assessing the implementation of the Parish Development Model and wealth creation initiatives in the area.

While presenting the memo, MP Iddi Isabirye (Bunya County) said Busoga is one of the few regions with the highest poverty rate as of the 2024 report of the National Population and Housing Census.

“Mr. President, there is a need for the government to initiate a unique prosperity program for the Busoga sub region. Integrated affirmative action programs will directly enable our people, numbering over 4.4 million, to overcome current poverty,” MP Isabirye said.

MP Isabirye said the affirmative action programs will effectively enable Busoga to eradicate its high poverty rate.

The leaders further asked President Museveni to ensure that the government compensate the victims of the Holy Spirit Movement insurgents (Auma Alice Lakwena).

He appealed to the government to historically address the issues affecting sugarcane farmers, residents that were chased away from the lake.

The leaders emphasized the need for the government to fully support the people who were evicted from the water.

“On fisheries, law and order has been a problem; it has led to loss of lives, sent people out of business, and affected several communities. Many youths who depend on the lake have also been rendered jobless,” MP Isabirye notes.

President Museveni directed the 1st Deputy Prime Minister, Rebecca Kadaga, to coordinate with other leaders to ensure that the pending pledges in the Busoga sub region are delivered.

Museveni is currently touring the Busoga sub region to assess the implementation of the Parish Development Model and wealth creation programs.
