The Ugandan Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in partnership with the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF), successfully recaptured the strategic town of Bariire in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region after an intense battle that lasted over 3 weeks.

This victory marks a significant milestone in the ongoing mission to restore peace and stability in an area long plagued by Al-Shabaab terrorists.

Bariire is the second town in the country’s lower Shabelle region to be liberated by the UPDF from the violent militant group after Sabid-Anole in June, 2025.

The military operation, code named Operation Silent Storm, followed previous successful offensives that reclaimed the towns of Sabiid and Anole from entrenched militants.

The mission involved an intensive combined arms assault and siege tactics that effectively dislodged terrorist fighters and dismantled their strongholds.

Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, AUSSOM Force Commander, lauded the joint forces for their bravery and effectiveness.

“I commend the gallant efforts of our UPDF troops and Somali National Armed Forces in degrading Al-Shabaab’s capabilities,” Lt Gen Kavuma said. “AUSSOM remains fully committed to the Somali Transition Plan, which aims to transfer full security responsibilities to Somali forces.”

Brigadier General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, Sector One Commander, hailed the victory as a significant milestone in the joint efforts for peace.

“This is a major success for AUSSOM, the Somali Government, and local communities who have long yearned for peace,” he stated.

This victory not only highlights the growing strength of regional cooperation in stabilizing Somalia but also reinforces efforts to build the capacity of local forces to maintain security independently. Currently, joint troops are securing Bariire and conducting clearance operations to eliminate remaining militant pockets.

The triumph in Bariire is a shared step toward a safer Somalia and a more secure East African region. By weakening terrorist networks, it paves the way for sustainable development, peace, and improved safety for local populations and neighboring countries alike.
