Uganda’s campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games Glasgow, Scotland has continued to gather momentum with Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai winning bronze in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase to secure the country’s third medal of the Games, while the national boxing team saw its medal hopes dashed after Aziz Abdul was disqualified in a dramatic quarter-final contest.
Chemutai, clocked 9:09.96 to finish third in a high-quality final at Scotstoun Stadium. Kenya’s Faith Cherotich stormed to gold in a new Commonwealth Games record of 9:01.76, while England’s Elise Thorner claimed silver in a personal best of 9:05.45 after a strong finishing kick.
The bronze medal adds another milestone to Chemutai’s distinguished career and lifts Uganda’s medal tally to three, following earlier silver medals won by para-swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe and the Gazelles women’s 3×3 basketball team.
Uganda opened its medal account on July 27th, 2026, when Kukundakwe claimed silver in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB8, becoming the country’s first medalist at the Glasgow Games. Two days later, on July 29th, the Gazelles made history by winning silver in the women’s 3×3 basketball competition after an impressive tournament run that saw them become the first Ugandan basketball team to win a Commonwealth Games medal.
Chemutai’s podium finish capped another memorable day for Team Uganda, reinforcing the country’s strength in athletics and extending its proud tradition of success in middle- and long-distance running on the international stage.
However, Uganda’s celebrations were tempered by disappointment in the boxing ring. Heavyweight boxer Aziz Abdul, the grandson of former Ugandan President Idi Amin, was disqualified during his quarter-final bout against England’s Damar Thomas after the referee ruled that he had headbutted his opponent in the third round. The decision immediately ended Uganda’s hopes of securing a boxing medal at the Games.
The disqualification sparked heated scenes, with Abdul protesting the referee’s decision after the contest. He maintained that the incident was unintentional, but officials upheld the disqualification, sending England’s Thomas through to the medal rounds.
Despite the boxing setback, Team Uganda has enjoyed one of its strongest Commonwealth Games campaigns in recent years. With three medals already secured, two silver and one bronze, the country’s athletes continue to demonstrate resilience and excellence across multiple sporting disciplines.
As competition enters its final days, Uganda will look to its remaining athletics and other events in pursuit of additional medals before the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games conclude on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026.
