The Deputy President of the Peoples Front for Freedom (PFF) party in charge of the Buganda region, Lulume Bayiga, has commended different opposition political parties and other concerned citizens for raising their voices to demand the unconditional release of Erias Lukwago.
According to Lulume, the release of Lukwago has been a combined effort of the change-seeking forces, both local and international.
“We also thank the sister parties, the opposition in particular, coming out to condemn and demand the release of our party President, Lukwago. Some parties have held press conferences and have written statements to pressure security to release Lukwago,” Lulume said.
Lulume made the remarks while addressing journalists on Wednesday, June 17th, 2026, at the PFF party headquarters on Katonga Road in Kampala.
Lulume also called on Ugandans to continue demanding justice for Dr. Kizza Besigye, Lukwago, and other alleged political prisoners, adding that their party will continue providing leadership to the change-seeking forces without fear or favor.
“I am imploring those who have not yet come out to speak against injustices in our country to do the same because this is not only about Lukwago or Besigye, but about every Ugandan,” Lulume said.
The media reports indicate that Lukwago was released on Wednesday morning and was kept at the Kira Division Police station, where his lawyers and family members saw him before he was cleared to be produced in Court.
According to Francis Mwijukye, the Deputy Treasurer of the PFF party, some supporters of Lukwago have been blocked from accessing him at the Kira Division Police Station, adding that they were instructed to stay away from police premises.
However, Doreen Nyanjura, the head of the Special Interest Group in the PFF party, alleged that Lukwago was driven to Makindye Magistrates’ Court.
While the state has allegedly linked Lukwago to the ongoing treason trial of veteran opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, his legal colleagues and political allies state that his arrest is a politically motivated attempt to block him from serving a high court summons to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
