The People’s Front for Freedom(PFF) party is set to petition the judiciary to grant Dr. Kizza Besigye permission to receive specialized treatment from abroad after his health reportedly deteriorated at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he was admitted two weeks ago.
According to Dr. Nicholas Kamara, Besigye’s health has continued to deteriorate since he was admitted to Mulago after he collapsed in the courtroom during a proceeding in which he was to be convicted of treason.
While addressing journalists at the PFF party headquarters on Katonga Road in Kampala, on Friday, August 7th, 2026, Kamara attributed Besigye’s deteriorating health to medical negligence that was engineered by both prison and judicial officers who denied Besigye a chance to access immediate medical attention from his doctors.
“There was Medical negligence after Besigye was not evacuated on time, and it’s through such negligence that Besigye’s Health has continued to deteriorate. Besigye was taken to a secret place at the High Court where there were no medical personnel. The government should account for what happened when Besigye was held in a secret place at the High Court,” Kamara said.
“Besigye should be transferred from Mulago to a well-equipped medical facility abroad to improve his health,” he added.
According to counsel Moses Tugume, the party’s Attorney General, Besigye has fallen ill because the issue of legal representation in the treason case remains unresolved after the government arrested Erias Lukwago and declared Martha Karua persona non grata.
He dismissed the state’s proposal to select lawyers for Besigye, adding that since Besigye is ill, it’s mandatory to adjourn the case because the court can’t proceed in the absence of the accused.
“We are going to write an application to the judiciary to grant permission to Besigye and Lukwago to be taken abroad for specialized treatment. I also appeal to the government to release Sam Mugumya and other political prisoners who are languishing in jail without trial,” Tugume said.
However, the party reporting on Besigye’s health is contrary to that of his wife, Winnie Byanyima who has maintained that her husband is slowly responding to the treatment.
Ambassador Waswa Birigwa was inquisitive about the long time Besigye spent in a closed place with the prison and judicial officers at the High Court while unconscious, adding that the party is also interested in knowing what happened to Besigye during the time before his transfer to Mulago.
Meanwhile, the treason trial of Besigye is currently halted at the High Court in Kampala as medical authorities evaluate his health after he collapsed during court proceedings.
