Police in Nakaseke district have arrested 22 people over alleged unlawful possession of wildlife species and suspected wildlife products.
The suspects were intercepted at about 11 p.m. on August 17th, 2026, while travelling in a white Toyota Hiace taxi at Mijumwa Trading Centre in Wakyato Sub-county.
According to the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, Sam Twiineamazima, officers searched the vehicle and recovered several items suspected to be linked to illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking.
Twiineamazima said the exhibits included hunting nets, spears, pangas, knives, unidentified roots and leaves, smoked and fresh suspected wild meat, three pairs of oribi horns, five bushbuck horns and porcupine quills.
“The Police in Nakaseke District have arrested 22 suspects in connection with the alleged unlawful possession of wildlife species and suspected wildlife products,” Twiineamazima said.
He said the recovered items had been secured as exhibits as investigations continue.
Police further noted that the suspects were travelling in the commercial taxi with sacks containing suspected wildlife products, including game meat and animal hides, alongside equipment believed to have been used for hunting and trapping wild animals.
Twiineamazima also said all 22 occupants were arrested and detained at Nakaseke Police Station as authorities commenced investigations into the source and intended destination of the suspected wildlife products.
A police case was opened as investigations continue.
