NUP Vows to Push Youth Campaigns Despite Police Restrictions

This latest round of tensions follows a warning issued by the Uganda Police Force on April 27, 2025, which was posted on their official X account.

NUP party Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya

National Unity Platform (NUP) party Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, has vowed that the party will press on with its planned activities despite continued interference from Uganda’s police force.

Addressing the media at the NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule on Monday, April 28, 2025, Rubongoya strongly criticized the Uganda Police Force for disrupting the party’s events, calling their actions an act of fear and cowardice.

“The police are scared of our activities, and that’s shameful. They are acting out of fear, but as NUP, we will continue with our alternative plans, no matter the disruptions,” Rubongoya stated.

Rubongoya accused the police of unfairly targeting NUP events while allowing activities of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to proceed without interference.

“We’ve seen Hajjat Namyalo and other NRM officials organizing their events with no disruption from the police, while we, at NUP, have faced constant interference. Just recently, our meetings in the Western and Northern regions were stopped, and now they’ve targeted our weekly press meetings at the headquarters,” he added.

This latest round of tensions follows a warning issued by the Uganda Police Force on April 27, 2025, which was posted on their official X account.

The police statement prohibited any gatherings related to the ongoing “protest vote” campaign organized by NUP, with the police warning that such events would not be allowed to proceed.

“UPF hereby notifies the organizers and all concerned parties that the proposed launch along with any associated activities will not be permitted,” the statement read.

In response, Sylivia Namutyaba, NUP’s Youth League Vice Chairperson, explained that the planned meeting was intended to prepare the NUP youth for the upcoming youth elections scheduled for June 2025 and to launch the party’s activities in anticipation of the 2026 general elections.

“We were set to officially launch our youth organizational activities today, but when we arrived at the NUP headquarters, we found it under siege by Museveni’s partisan security forces. This is just the beginning, and we want to tell Ugandans to get ready for what’s coming,” Namutyaba declared.

With 2026 elections nearing closer, many political parties are launching road maps to inform their supporters on upcoming activities and how best they can prepare for the general elections.
