The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has officially cancelled its highly anticipated National Delegates Conference that was scheduled for Thursday, July 31, 2025, after the party’s top leadership reached a consensus on a sole presidential flag bearer for the 2026 general elections.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi on Wednesday, July 30, FDC National Chairman Jack Sabiiti announced that the delegates meeting would no longer be necessary following a successful reconciliation process mediated by the party elders.
“Today, I stand before you to inform the country and the membership of FDC that the Delegates Conference slated for July 31 has been called off.Our presidential candidates have shown maturity and unity by reaching a consensus without subjecting the party to an expensive internal contest,” Sabiiti said.
Amuriat stepped down in favour of Mafabi, ending what would have been a tense intra-party contest and paving the way for Mafabi to become the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2026 polls.
He stressed that his decision was not out of fear or political pressure but a selfless act to preserve party cohesion.
“I have taken a decision which may be unpopular among my supporters, but this is not about fear or cowardice. It is a decision for unity to save our party from unnecessary divisions and to conserve financial resources,” he said.
The FDC had initially planned to use the Delegates Conference to pick its presidential flag bearer, but the elders’ intervention and the peaceful agreement between the two aspirants means that process is now concluded.
With this endorsement, Nandala Mafabi becomes the official FDC flag bearer and is expected to be formally nominated by the Electoral Commission in September 2025.
