The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared itself fully prepared to conduct the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 2026, following the conclusion of campaigns by all candidates.
The by-election is expected to test the Commission’s preparedness ahead of a series of upcoming electoral activities, including Local Council and Women Council elections slated for later this year.
Speaking ahead of polling day, Electoral Commission spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said all logistical and administrative arrangements had been finalized to ensure a smooth, peaceful and credible electoral process.
“Preparations for the Kalangala District Woman MP by-election are in the final stages following the successful conclusion of campaigns by all candidates,” Mucunguzi said.
According to the Commission, five candidates were successfully nominated to contest for the parliamentary seat, with the nomination exercise proceeding without any formal petitions or disputes.
Mucunguzi described the peaceful nomination process as a reflection of the preparedness exhibited by both political parties and independent candidates participating in the race.
“The Commission did not receive any petitions or complaints arising from the nomination process, which demonstrates the level of preparedness among political parties and candidates,” he noted.
The Electoral Commission also commended candidates, supporters and security agencies for maintaining peace throughout the campaign period.
According to Mucunguzi, no major incidents of violence or electoral-related disruptions were reported during the campaigns, allowing candidates to freely canvass for votes across the island district.
“The Kalangala by-election campaigns have largely been peaceful, with no major incidents of violence reported throughout the campaign period,” he said.
The Commission has since urged voters to turn up in large numbers and participate peacefully in the electoral exercise while adhering to electoral laws and guidelines.
Mucunguzi called upon candidates, agents, security personnel and voters to uphold peace before, during and after the election.
“We call upon all stakeholders to maintain peace and continue adhering to electoral laws and guidelines throughout the voting process,” he emphasized.
The Kalangala District Woman MP by-election comes at a time when the Electoral Commission is preparing for several grassroots elections across the country, including Village Local Council I and Women Council elections scheduled in the coming weeks.
Political observers say the by-election will provide an important opportunity to assess the effectiveness of electoral management systems ahead of those exercises.
Polling is expected to take place across designated polling stations in Kalangala District, with results anticipated shortly after the conclusion of voting and tallying processes.
The Electoral Commission has expressed confidence that the election will be conducted in a free, fair, transparent and orderly manner.
