The interim Executive Chairperson of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party, Bayiga Lulume has condemned the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) Authorities for denying them access to Dr. Kizza Besigye, who needs private medical attention after he collapsed in court during his treason trial on Wednesday, July 29th, 2026, at the High Court in Kampala.
According to Lulume, their denial of access to Besigye was allegedly a calculated move by the state Authorities to terminate Besigye’s life because they wouldn’t behave the same way given the unpleasant health conditions of Besigye since his incarceration in 2024.
While addressing journalists on Thursday, July 30th, 2026, at the PFF party headquarters on Katonga Road in Kampala, Lulume appealed to Uganda’s Chief Justice Flavian Zeija to discontinue Justice Emmanuel Baguma from presiding over Besigye’s treason case, citing lack of competence and professionalism.
“We are worried of what happened on Besigye in the hands of the state medics while he was unconscious. Why is it that the Uganda Prisons Service failed to reveal where he was taken for medical attention only us to realise on our intelligence that Besigye was driven to Mbuya military hospital and later to Mulago National Referral Hospital in the intensive care unit and we are here announcing to you that Besigye is critically ill and unresponsive to pain stimulai,” Lulume said.
Lulume also alleged that UPS has been taken over by the military, stating that its the military officers dressed in prisons uniform to conduct state operations.
“Prisons Service has been infiltrated by the military,because for us who have been been in Prison, we know why prisons officers operate and handle issues. What we saw at the court was just military in the prisons uniform. Why would a prisons officer be that bitter and angry against us accessing our sick leader?” Lulume asked.
The collapse of Besigye sparked endless media conversation where some netzens have argued that Besigye’s collapse was a stunt to interdict court proceedings where he was being pinned by the state witnesses. However, those on his side also argued that he collapsed in a protest of court proceedings without his defence of his choice.
