Spain has won the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in extra time during finals at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, July 19th, 2026.
Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute. His strike secured Spain’s second World Cup title and their first since 2010.
The final was closely contested. Spain controlled possession for long periods, while Argentina threatened on the counterattack. Neither side found a breakthrough in normal time before the match went to extra time.
Argentina’s task became harder after Enzo Fernández was sent off late in the match. Spain took advantage of the extra player in extra time, and Torres calmly finished to send the Spanish fans into celebration.
Spain completed an impressive tournament run. They knocked out Portugal in the Round of 16, Belgium in the quarter-finals and France in the semi-finals before overcoming Argentina in the final.
Midfielder Rodri was named the tournament’s Best Player. Goalkeeper Unai Simón won the Golden Glove. Defender Pau Cubarsí received the Young Player Award. France’s Kylian Mbappé finished as the tournament’s top scorer and won the Golden Boot.
For Argentina, the defeat ended their World Cup title defence. It could also mark Lionel Messi’s final appearance at the tournament. Spain, meanwhile, celebrated a historic second FIFA World Cup title.
