Erias Lukwago who was appointed the Interim party President of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, has assumed office and started his duty as mandated, saying that the resolution was made giving them the mandate to take charge of the party and assured the nation that as the acting party President, he is in charge.

While addressing journalists at Katonga Road offices on Monday, September 25, 2023, Lukwago said that, they have very limited time to accomplish a lot and bring the party back on the rail.

He said that, the party had been derailed by a gang, and their determination is to bring it back through the guidance of the party constitution.

Lukwago said that they were given the mandate to constitute the interim leadership, and therefore, wants to reassure that the party President, Patrick Amuriat Oboi was suspended and a resolution was made that disciplinary proceedings be taken to ensure that the resolution is implemented without violation.

“Thou shall not commit a wrong and go court free. Thou shall not flagrantly and blatantly violate the party constitution with reckless abandon and go away without any sanction,” Lukwago noted.

As he takes on his appointment, Lukwago said that, he will be chairing the first NEC meeting on Thursday, September 28, 2023, where they will be rolling out a new roadmap for party structures for elections and the Chief Electoral Commissioner plus his team would be giving a detailed program on how the elections would be conducted.

“We are mindful of the time constraints, challenges, because we are in a transitional period but we are putting everything in place to ensure that we have a smooth electoral process. We assure the people of conducting a credible electoral process befitting the party. We will ensure that the party constitution will be respected in that regard,” Lukwago said.

This comes from the FDC split in July, 2023 where the Party got divided into two factions that is, the Katonga faction (Erias Lukwagwo, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, Doreen Nyanjura, Francis Mwijukye and others) and Najjanankumbi faction (Nandala Mafabi, Patrick Amuriat and others).

The fire for the split sparked off when Ssemujju accused Nandala and the FDC party President Amuriat of trying to sell FDC to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

According to Ssemujju, and the company brought billions of shillings into the party during the 2021 elections and refused to disclose its source. He said that, it was the money that was used to make large purchases including cars from Cooper Motors that were used in the 2021 general elections.
