The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party has unveiled new party leaders while expressing deep concern over the worsening state of human rights and the rule of law in Uganda.
Addressing journalists at a press conference on Wednesday, July 22nd, 2026, at the party’s new headquarters in Makamba Zone, Lungunjja, the Secretary General, Alice Alaso announced the appointment of Kassiano Ezati Wadri as the substantive National Coordinator and Ismail Kasule as the new Party Spokesperson.
According to Alaso, the Party President, Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu remains the leader of ANT, while Wadri, a founding member and long-serving Member of Parliament, has been coordinating national mobilization and will now focus on strengthening party structures.
She added that Kasule, the MP for Hoima City West, takes over from the previous spokesperson, who stepped aside to pursue political activities.
Muntu described the country’s human rights situation as increasingly worrying, pointing to the continued detention of Dr. Kizza Besigye beyond the constitutional 180-day limit for automatic bail, the banning of lawyer Martha Karua, and the recent abduction of Muwanga Kivumbi following his release on bail.
He cautioned against repeating Uganda’s troubled history of abuse of power and urged religious leaders, the business community, professional bodies, and even NRM members to speak out against fear and impunity.
Wadri condemned a proposed motion to amend the Administration of Parliament Act, which would allow Parliament to elect the Leader of the Opposition. He argued that the proposal goes against Commonwealth Parliamentary Association standards, under which the opposition party with the largest membership chooses its own leader.
“We are not inventing the wheel,” Wadri said, calling on NRM MPs to reflect on history and oppose the move to protect institutional integrity.
Kasule accepted the role with humility, pledging to communicate ANT’s vision of putting people first while upholding the rule of law, integrity, and strong institutions. The party also extended its condolences to the family of the late General Moses Ali.
ANT also called on the media and all Ugandans to defend press freedom and reject the culture of fear, stressing that only collective action can help build a stable and prosperous Uganda.
