President Yoweri Museveni has led Parliament in paying tribute to the late Gen (Rtd) Moses Ali, describing him as a patriot, freedom fighter and peacemaker whose contribution to Uganda’s stability and the integration of West Nile will remain part of the country’s history.

Speaking during a special sitting parliamentary sitting on Tuesday, July 21st, 2026, President Museveni said Gen Moses Ali played a critical role in ending conflict in the West Nile sub-region and chose national reconciliation over prolonged armed struggle.

“He was a freedom fighter, a patriot and a peacemaker. When we engaged, he understood that Uganda needed unity rather than endless conflict,” Museveni said.

The President noted that the late statesman demonstrated political maturity by embracing dialogue and working with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) after years of armed conflict, a decision he said helped restore peace and stability in West Nile.

“Moses Ali made the correct historical decision to work with us in building one Uganda. That is why the people of West Nile have enjoyed peace and development,” he noted.

He also praised the veteran politician’s commitment to agriculture, saying he led by example as a commercial farmer.

“He was not only a political leader but also a modern farmer who showed that wealth can be created through agriculture,” the President said.

The President urged Ugandans, especially young leaders, to emulate Gen Moses Ali’s spirit of patriotism, reconciliation and service to the nation.

Gen Moses Ali, who died on Saturday, July 18th, 2026, at Nakasero Hospital at the age of 87 years, served Uganda in several capacities over five decades, including Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Finance Minister, Second Deputy Prime Minister, First Deputy Prime Minister, Cabinet Minister, military officer and Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County. His body was honoured in Parliament before being flown to Adjumani District ahead of his burial on Wednesday.
