NPresident Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Uganda’s successful co-hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), pledging full funding, faster infrastructure delivery, and stronger regional cooperation.

Speaking during a meeting with the AFCON Local Organising Committee at State House Entebbe on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2026, President Museveni assured officials that the government would provide the financial and technical support needed to meet CAF deadlines.

Uganda will co-host the 2027 tournament with Kenya and Tanzania under the East African “Pamoja” bid, the first time AFCON will be staged in the region.

A key outcome of the meeting was President Museveni’s backing of a single East African AFCON visa, which would allow fans, teams, officials, and tourists to travel freely across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania during the tournament.

“I support it. This is common sense,” the President said, directing that discussions begin with his Kenyan and Tanzanian counterparts to implement the proposal.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who presented the proposal, said a common visa would ease movement across the three host nations and enhance the tournament experience.

Acting Commissioner for Citizenship and Immigration Control Col Geoffrey Brian Kambere noted that Uganda already operates a similar visa arrangement with Kenya and Rwanda and called for Tanzania to join under the Pamoja framework.

The meeting also reviewed progress on Uganda’s preparations ahead of CAF’s next inspection on August 31st, 2026. Government is targeting completion of all major AFCON projects by December 31st, including upgrades to Mandela National Stadium, training facilities, Kabalega International Airport, roads around Hoima City Stadium, and the Busunju–Kiboga–Hoima Road.

State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang said all ministries and agencies are implementing their responsibilities under a whole-of-government approach, while Finance Minister Henry Musasizi assured that funding for approved projects has already been provided for in the current financial year. Works Minister Fred Byamukama also pledged to complete the Busunju–Hoima road on schedule.

The meeting was attended by cabinet ministers, permanent secretaries, FUFA President Moses Magogo, KCCA Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki, and members of the AFCON Local Organising Committee.
