The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has emphasized the importance of African-led security solutions and stronger regional cooperation following the 10th African Chiefs of Defense Conference held in Luanda, Angola.

Addressing journalists during a digital press briefing on Thursday, July 2nd, 2026, General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, the Commander of U.S. Africa Command, said the conference centered on practical ways to address shared threats while connecting security with economic opportunity.

He noted that the event brought together chiefs of defense from across the continent, along with representatives from U.S. government agencies and industry.

“We had representatives from industry and commercial companies here as well to provide opportunities or ideas for various chiefs of defense,” Anderson said.

Anderson highlighted discussions on countering transnational threats such as terrorism, organized crime, and narcotics trafficking through stronger information sharing and coordinated action.

The General pointed to recent cooperation with Nigeria against ISIS, where combined efforts significantly weakened the group’s leadership and led to increased defections.

He further said those partnerships demonstrate how U.S. capabilities in intelligence and targeted operations can support African forces without replacing them. Anderson stressed that face-to-face engagement remains essential for building trust among partners.

Anderson also noted the importance of innovation, including the use of commercially available technology and African-developed solutions designed for local conditions.

The commander said AFRICOM’s long-term approach focuses on enabling African partners to address threats sustainably while supporting stability that encourages investment and economic growth.

He added that security and prosperity are interconnected and must advance together to create lasting results across the continent.
