The National Unity Platform (NUP) party Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya has tasked all party supporters countrywide to not only go and vote for NUP for positions of village LCI chairpersons and women council leaders but also offer themselves and contest for different position at the village level.

Rubongoya made these remarks on Wednesday, July 1st, 2026, at the NUP party headquarters at Makerere Kavule while addressing members of the press.

He said that the NRM has for many years bragged about having control of all village leaders and now is the time for NUP to fully participate in all villages countrywide and win seats at the village level.

“We all know the LCI structure is the first structure and if you are to strengthen the party you start with these structures. So I encourage all the leaders to engage in these elections,” Rubongoya said.

Rubongoya, however, added that many people are skeptical to engage in these elections given the way the past elections have been handled by the current regime but insists that participating in the election is very important as it is also another way of exposing the government.

“Before arresting our people they start with the LCI defense structure so it’s very important that we participate in these elections in all districts in Uganda and if the regime tries to rig them, then they will expose themselves more,” Rubongoya added.

The Election Management Committee (EMC) chairperson for NUP, Harriet Chemutai also called upon all NUP members to engage in the elections and gave them a clear roadmap and days of the party primaries and how flag bearers will be reached at internally.

“From 6th -10th July there will be registration of voters, make sure you register so that you can be part of the elections of lc1 and women leaders, from 9th – 14th there will be picking of nomination forms at parish level, from 20th – 22nd July there will be campaigning for women leaders then on 23rd there will be voting by lining up for all women councils at village level. From 20th -27th, July campaigns for LCI chairperson and on 28th of July voting all LCI chairpersons, please go and vote,” Chemutai noted.

On Monday, June 22, 2026 the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama announced a clear roadmap for the LCI and LC II elections and noted that no academic qualifications shall be required for the election of the village (LC I) chairperson and no nomination fee shall be required.
