The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President, Jimmy Akena has announced an emergency National Council meeting scheduled for Saturday, June 13th, 2026, to discuss the party’s status, the conduct of the 2026 general election, and UPC’s future direction and engagement.
Addressing journalists at a press conference on Tuesday, June 10th, 2026, at Uganda House, Akena used the occasion to contrast UPC’s people-centred policy approach with that of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
“The question of the interns is not just a question of allowances. It touches on the priorities a government sets for itself and sets for its purpose. As UPC, we look at the interns as a key factor in delivery of health services for the citizens of Uganda. You must have a system which works for and on behalf of the citizens of Uganda,” Akena said.
He criticized NRM’s approach to health service delivery, power generation, the Uganda Development Bank, and commercial agriculture, arguing that UPC had established many of the foundational policies in those sectors decades ago.
Akena declared that he would convene the National Council using powers vested in him under the party constitution.
“I am therefore using the powers as the President of the Uganda’s People’s Congress. I am going to be calling a National Council meeting this Saturday. We’re going to be discussing the status of the Ugandan People’s Congress. We’re also going to be discussing the conduct of the last general election and UPC’s response to that,” Akena noted.
He defended his leadership amid internal challenges, saying he remained fully committed to guiding the party despite the difficulties encountered during the election period.
The UPC president invited anyone with stronger policy proposals to present them at the upcoming delegates’ conference, insisting that his 2026 manifesto proposals were meticulously researched, practical, and capable of implementation.
