Uganda’s Middle-Distance Runners Shine at CAA Africa U18/U20 Championships

Uganda’s young middle-distance runners have made their mark at the 3rd edition of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Africa U18/U20 Championships, held in Abeokuta, Nigeria, from July 17–18, 2025.

The competition at the M.K.O. Stadium showcased a blend of talent, determination, and fierce competition, with Uganda emerging as a major contender in African athletics.

Nancy Chepkwurui claimed gold in the women’s 1500m U20 final, crossing the line in an impressive 4:10.3.

The 18-year-old demonstrated remarkable strength and speed, narrowly beating Kenya’s Sheila Chepng’etich, who secured the silver with a time of 4:10.7.

It was a thrilling race that saw the top three competitors separated by just a few tenths of a second, showing the intense rivalry between Uganda and Kenya in the distance running domain.

Chepkwurui’s compatriot, Brenda Chepkwemoi, also put on a strong performance, claiming the bronze medal with a time of 4:13.0.

The two Ugandan athletes showcased their growing dominance in the middle-distance category, securing valuable podium positions in a highly competitive field.

Felister Chepkwemoi, another Ugandan talent, finished 7th in the race, contributing to Uganda’s strong representation at the event.

In a statement shared on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Uganda Athletics celebrated the success.

“Gold for Chepkwurui Nancy, Bronze for Chepkwemoi Brenda in the women’s 1500m U20 at the CAA Africa U18 & U20 Championships in Nigeria! Kudos to Chepkwemoi Felister for a strong finish at 7th,” the association said.

The men’s 1500m U20 final also saw a strong performance from Uganda, with Jacob Sande securing a bronze medal in a competitive race. Bentalin Yeko claimed gold in the women’s U20 3000m event, further adding to Uganda’s medal tally.

So far, Uganda has claimed four medals at the CAA Africa U18/U20 Championships; two gold and two bronze showcasing their rising talent in African athletics.
