Uganda’s aviation sector is experiencing significant growth, with improved security measures and the near-completion of a major upgrade at Entebbe International Airport.

These developments were highlighted at a stakeholders’ engagement breakfast hosted by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) on January 21, 2025.

UCAA Director General Fred Bamwesigye emphasized the significant strides made in enhancing aviation security.

He noted that the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme—Continuous Monitoring Assessment (USAP-CMA) results for Uganda surpassed both the regional average of 64.5% and the global average of 72.36%.

“This achievement demonstrates a strong commitment to aviation safety and builds confidence among travelers and the international aviation community.” Bamwesigye said.

Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, the Works and Transport Minister, announced that the upgrade of Entebbe International Airport is 95% complete, with the Passenger Terminal Building reaching 82% completion.

“The project is expected to be finalized by June 2025. Upon completion, the terminal’s capacity will increase from 2 million to 3.5 million passengers annually, significantly boosting the airport’s handling capacity,” Gen Katumba said.

Gen Katumba stressed the significance of the upgraded airport for Ugandan exporters.

“The facility is now equipped to meet the stringent standards and requirements of the European Union (EU), ensuring seamless handling and processing of exports. This includes perishable goods, agricultural products, and other items, facilitating smoother trade relations with the EU market,” he said.

Furthermore, the improvements in aviation security and the imminent completion of the Entebbe Airport upgrade signify a bright future for Uganda’s aviation sector. These developments are expected to drive economic growth, enhance connectivity, and position Uganda as a key player in regional and international air travel.
