The Uganda Prisons Service has promoted 4,996 junior officers across various ranks in a move aimed at strengthening professionalism and operational efficiency within the institution.

The promotions, approved by the 36th Prisons Council, affect officers ranging from the rank of Warder/Wardress to Principal Officer I, marking one of the largest personnel advancements within the service in recent years.

According to a statement issued by Frank Baine Mayanja, the Senior Commissioner of Prisons and Service Spokesperson, the promotions were carried out in line with available vacancies within the established prisons structure.

The breakdown of the promotions includes 139 officers elevated to Principal Officer I, 196 to Principal Officer II, and over 800 officers promoted to various Chief Warder/Wardress ranks. In addition, 1,512 officers have been promoted to Sergeant Warder/Wardress, 633 to Corporal, and 1,679 to Lance Corporal.

Baine said the promotions recognize dedication, discipline, and commitment among officers who have consistently executed their duties.

“The Commissioner General commends all junior officers on their well-earned promotions. Their dedication, discipline and commitment to duty have been duly recognized,” he stated in a press release.

He added that the newly promoted officers have been urged to uphold high standards of professionalism and continue striving for excellence in service delivery.

The Prisons Service also noted that officers who were not promoted in the current cycle will be considered in subsequent rounds as more vacancies arise.

The development comes as part of ongoing efforts to motivate personnel and enhance performance within the correctional system.
