New Makerere Chancellor Pledges to Solve Problems at the University

Dr. Crispus Walter Kiyonga, the new Chancellor for Makerere University

Dr. Crispus Walter Kiyonga, the new Chancellor for Makerere University, has pledged to work with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, and other stakeholders of the university to establish the main problems faced by the university and come up with the best solutions to solve these problems.

He said this during his acceptance remarks as the new Chancellor, following his appointment by President Museveni on August 31, 2024, and was officially installed by the President on October 2, 2024, during the reopening of the Ivory Tower.

“We want to make Makerere University one that produces national and international assets, and the only way of doing that is by involving all stakeholders of the university in decision-making. We want students to be more involved in the decision-making of the university,” he stated.

Dr. Kiyonga also suggested that the university land be used for the construction of university laboratories and practical centers.

“Laboratories and study centers should be constructed on idle university land to ensure that students get practical study of what they are studying. This will help them to liberate and develop Africa, which is one of the major goals of the university,” he added.

Dr. Crispus Walter Kiyonga is the fourth non-head of state Chancellor of Makerere University, with the first having been Rt. Hon. Professor Apollo Robin Nsibambi, the second, Professor George Mondo Kagonyera, and the third, Professor Ezra Suruma. He is replacing professor Suruma, who retired from the position in 2023.
