Makerere University Guild President, Vincent Lubega Nsamba, has asked HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to regularly visit the university to provide ideological guidance to the students.

He made this call during the official opening of the reconstructed Ivory Tower and installation of the Chancellor, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, at Freedom Square, Makerere, on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

“We believe you are one of the ideological proponents and individuals that we have in this country, and so we request that you ease a day in your busy schedule to come back here at the university and ideologically orient the young population,” Lubega said.

During his speech, he expressed gratitude to the President for releasing the funds to cater for the reconstruction of the Ivory Tower and renovation of halls of residence. He acknowledged that the contribution has improved the welfare of the students and the academic life on the campus.

Kiyonga was installed as the new Chancellor for Makerere University, replacing Professor Ezra Suruma, who retired from the position in 2023.

In his acceptance speech, he stated that involving all university stakeholders in decision-making is the only approach to achieving the university’s goal of becoming a producer of national and worldwide assets.

“We desire increased student participation in university decision-making,” he said.

On 20 September 2020, a fire gutted the Ivory Tower building at Makerere University, leaving huge cracks on the outer walls and completely burning off the roof and most windows.
