Police in Kampala have arrested 48 suspects in an operation targeting criminal activity in Kajjansi and surrounding areas.

The raid, which began at around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, was carried out by officers from the Kajjansi Police Division following actionable intelligence about criminal gangs operating in known hotspots.

Eighteen suspects were arrested in Muchanga, 20 in Kajjansi town, and 10 at Sanyu Brothel, a notorious site for illegal activities.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, many of the suspects had been disguising themselves as bottle and dustbin collectors during the day, only to turn to robbery at night.

“Police recovered a range of suspected housebreaking tools, including pliers, knives, and other implements believed to have been used in recent break-ins,” Owoyesigyire said.

All exhibits have been secured as evidence, and statements from both the complainants and arresting officers have been recorded.

The majority of the suspects, aged between 17 and 23, are being held at Bwebajja and Lubowa Police Stations while investigations continue.

Authorities have stated that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and enhance security in the Kampala Metropolitan area.

“We remain committed to protecting communities by disrupting criminal networks and ensuring those involved are brought to justice,” Owoyesigyire said.

He urged the public to continue sharing timely information to support law enforcement efforts.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
