The US Mission in Uganda has said it will deny visas to Ugandan mothers seeking to primarily give birth in the USA.
In a July 1, 2025 statement released by the mission on their X handle, they noted that it has become a habit for pregnant women to travel and give birth, an act that is prohibited.
“Using your visa to travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States so that your child will have U.S. citizenship is not permitted,” the US Mission said.
The US Mission confirmed that Visa applications will be denied if it is found that one is planning to practice what they termed “Birth Tourism”.
“Consular officers will deny your visa application if they have reason to believe this is your intent,” they added.
According to the Mission, various Ugandan parents do this to secure citizenship for their children without considering the implications it has on the country.
“Many Ugandan parents with tourist visas travel to the United States for the purpose of giving birth, and they use government assistance to pay for their medical care. These costs are passed on to the American taxpayer,” the Mission stressed.
The US Mission said parents practicing Birth Tourism may not be eligible to renew their visas in the future if found.
