The British High Commission in Uganda has launched the Commonwealth Sport campaign dubbed more in Common, celebrating shared values, Uganda’s athletic excellence and a historic moment for African leadership in global sport.

According to Lisa Chesney, the British High Commissioner to Uganda, the campaign celebrates shared values of the 74 Commonwealth nations and territories as they prepare to compete in Scotland from July 23rd to August 2nd, 2026.

While speaking at the launch on Monday, May 4th, 2026, Chesney revealed that the games are expected to bring together over 30,000 athletes across the world with Uganda sending 50 athletes across nine categories of sports led by the world-class distance runners, para athletes, boxers and the She Cranes netball team which is currently linked sixths according to world rankings.

“We choose to launch the campaign through a conversation rather than a ceremony because it’s about connection, shared grounds and everyday interaction that make sport possible,” Chesney said.

Dr. Donald Rukare, the President of the Uganda Olympic Committee said sports in society are more than competition, adding that it’s a powerful force for unity, health and progress, it builds character, bridges and inspires youth to dream big.

“This campaign is not entirely about the athletes, Husnah Kukundakwe who stepped on the world stage at just 14 years and became Uganda’s first paraswimmer at common wealth games, Denis Mbaziira Uganda’s first para lifter and Jacob Kiplimo and Victor Kiplagat who broke records and won gold in Birmingham 2022 and alongside Rukare’s election as the first African President of common wealth sport, shows why this moment matters, as United Kingdom prepares to host Games,” Chesney said.

According to media reports, Uganda has been participating in the Commonwealth Games since 1954 where athletes have won 58 medals across athletics, and boxing with particular strength in long-distance running.

Uganda has won the men’s 10,000 metres at 5 consecutive Commonwealth Games with Jacob Kiplimo taking gold in 500 metres and 10,000 metres and Victor Kiplagat winning Commonwealth gold in 2022.

Glasgow 2026 will be the most inclusive Commonwealth Games ever held with para sport fully integrated into the games since 2022, a global first for major sport events and the commitment has grown at every game since Glasgow, which will feature 47% para sport gold medals across all sports, the largest para programme in Commonwealth Games history.

Meanwhile, the more in common campaign will feature a diverse mix of digital storytelling and high-profile events designed to engage government leaders, the business community and Uganda’s vibrant youth with an athlete spotlight series, Commonwealth sports day and King’s birthday send-off party celebrations.
