Arsenal’s Breakthrough After 22 Years: One Game Away from Lifting English Football’s Biggest Prize

For 22 years, it remained a dream that many Arsenal fans feared they might never witness again.

Managers changed. Generations of players came and left. Rivals dominated English football. Seasons collapsed under pressure. Yet through the frustration, Arsenal F.C. supporters continued to believe that one day the Premier League trophy would finally return to North London.

Now, after more than two decades of waiting, Arsenal are champions of England once again.

The club officially secured the 2025/26 Premier League title after closest challengers Manchester City F.C. were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth, leaving Arsenal unreachable at the top of the table with one league match still remaining.

For Arsenal supporters across the world including thousands in Uganda the moment carries emotional weight far beyond football.

The last time Arsenal lifted the English league title was during the historic 2003/04 “Invincibles” season under legendary manager Arsène Wenger, when the club completed an entire league campaign unbeaten. Since then, Arsenal endured years of decline, financial restrictions, managerial instability, and repeated heartbreak in title races.

At one point, Arsenal even failed to qualify for European football entirely during the 2020/21 season something that had not happened in 26 years.

Everything changed when former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta took charge in December 2019.

At the time, many questioned whether the inexperienced Spaniard could rebuild one of England’s biggest clubs. Arsenal was struggling competitively and psychologically, drifting further away from the standards established during the Wenger era.

Arteta, however, insisted the club needed patience, discipline, and cultural change before trophies could return.

Over the next several seasons, Arsenal slowly transformed from an inconsistent side into genuine title contenders. They finished second three consecutive times before finally breaking through this season.

This title was not won through star power alone.

It was built on structure, defensive discipline, tactical maturity, and belief.

Arsenal finished the season with 25 wins, seven draws, and only five defeats while conceding just 26 goals  the best defensive record in the league.

Football analysts say that defensive solidity became the defining difference between Arsenal and their rivals.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith told Sky Sports:

“Arsenal have had the best defence.”

The squad itself reflects Arteta’s long-term rebuild.

Young academy graduate Bukayo Saka evolved into one of Europe’s elite forwards, Declan Rice became the midfield engine, while William Saliba established himself among the league’s most dominant defenders. Martin Ødegaard led the side as captain, while new signing Viktor Gyökeres added goals at crucial moments throughout the campaign.

The title race itself was one of the fiercest in recent years.

Manchester City, under Pep Guardiola, pushed Arsenal relentlessly until the final weeks. At different stages of the season, City looked favourites to extend their dominance after Arsenal dropped crucial points in April.

Liverpool, Manchester United, and Aston Villa also remained competitive for large periods of the campaign, but Arsenal’s consistency and defensive organization eventually proved decisive.

Even Guardiola acknowledged Arsenal’s rise.

Speaking after City lost control of the title race, Guardiola said:

“They are a team that have fought.”

Arteta himself never publicly abandoned belief — even during difficult moments.

In April, after a damaging defeat to Manchester City threatened Arsenal’s title hopes, Arteta insisted:

“We are convinced.”

That belief has now delivered Arsenal’s 14th English league title and their first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2020.

Yet remarkably, Arsenal’s season may still become even greater.

The club has also reached the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in 20 years and now stands one match away from European glory.

Across Uganda, celebrations erupted immediately after confirmation of the title victory.

Sports bars in Kampala, Jinja, Mbarara, and Gulu filled with supporters dressed in Arsenal colours while social media platforms were flooded with emotional reactions from fans who said they had waited their entire lives for this moment.

For older supporters, the title revives memories of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Arsène Wenger.

For younger fans, it is the first time they have ever seen Arsenal crowned champions.
