President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni together with the First Lady Mama Janet Museveni, the Minister of Education and Sports have today launched Uganda’s joint bid to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Museveni received Uganda’s AFCON 2027 joint bid with Kenya and Tanzania (EAC Pamoja bid) while meeting the National Council of Sports (NCS) officials who had paid him a visit at State House, Entebbe on Monday, May 22, 2023.

He appreciated the importance of the game and how significantly it has changed people’s standards of living through income generation.

“Sports is very good, and it has now transformed from mere emizanyo to emirimo. This is good, let’s take advantage of it, but don’t confuse the youth that it is the only thing,” Museveni said.

He welcomed the idea to host AFCON in 2027, but warned youth against prioritizing sports and they forget other income generating activities.

“Add sports to the ancient sources of income like agriculture, manufacturing, hotels and others,” he advised.

He added that Sports is good for health, entertainment and more so, business.

President Museveni noted that for East Africa to come together to invite the African Cup of Nations in Uganda is a very good gesture, adding that this will promote East African countries and boost tourism.
