The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development (MLHUD) is set to hold the 7th Land Awareness Week (LAW) 2023, in Lango sub-county under the theme “Promoting Land Rights and Inclusion for Enhanced Production and Sustainable Development”

Judith Nabakooba, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development while addressing journalists at Uganda Media Centre (UMC) on Thursday, August 24, 2023, said that the event is being organized by the ministry in conjunction with seven District Local Governments, other partners, and other Non-State Actors.

According to Nabakooba, the concept of LAW 2023 is an innovation of the Ministry and the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) working on Land.

She stated that, the aim of the LAW is to strengthen the capacity of farming communities, land owners and users.

“The LAW 2023 is aimed at strengthening the capacity of farming communities, land owners and users including women, youth, Persons with Disabilities-PWDs, and other vulnerable groups on their land rights and obligations,” Nabakooba said.

She explained that the LAW 2023 can be achieved through information dissemination of the policy & regulatory frameworks on land & environment, consciousness building and dialogues on the regional specific issues impacting on land rights and sustainable environmental management issues.

Nabakooba further said that the LAW 2023 shall be delivered through a series of activities.

“The LAW 2023 shall be delivered through a series of activities which include among others community dialogues, mobile legal aid clinics, radio and Television (TV) talk shows, music exhibition, youth debates and poems, social media engagements,” she added.

She stated that a similar event shall be held in Busia district focusing on issues of extractives/mining and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.

LAW was first implemented nationally by the Ministry and Partners in 2017 in Acholi region.

Subsequently, other national events followed in Teso region in 2018, Karamoja region in 2019, West Nile region in 2020, Central region in 2021, in Kigezi region in 2022, and the current one to be held in the Lango region 2023.
