The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has lifted the suspension on the recruitment process at Uganda Cancer Institute ( UCI).

In a statement released on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, the IG lifted the suspension of recruitment at the institute as investigations are still ongoing.

According to the IG, the suspension of the recruitment was effected six months ago, pending investigations into complaints that the process was marred with irregularities.

“The Inspectorate of Government, has lifted the suspension in the recruitment process at UCI, following engagements between the IG, Board and Management of UCI held at the IG head office. The suspension has been lifted as investigations into the matter continue,” the statement read in part.

Some of the complaints reported included, irregular recruitment of staff without following established processes and procedures, unjustified dismissal of staff, non-payment of suppliers, and irregular acquisition of hotel services.

Other complaints noted were, sexual harassment of staff, inflated prices for contracts executed at the institute, promotions that are not based on merit, and misuse of funds meant for training.

The Deputy Inspector General of Government, Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe, led the engagements and addressed a series of complaints of maladministration and administrative injustice at the institute.

“In order not to derail service delivery at the UCI, criminal matters would not be discussed, as investigations were still ongoing,” Muhairwe said.

Muhairwe acknowledged the role played by the board in addressing some of the complaints raised, and appreciated the efforts made at the institute to address the health challenges.

She noted that, there is need to continue engaging the top leadership of the institute in order to expedite the process.

The Chairperson of the Board, Prof. William Bazeyo appreciated the IG for engaging them to address issues at the institute.
