Somalia has renewed its appreciation for Uganda’s nearly two-decade role in restoring peace and stability, as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held high-level talks with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni aimed at strengthening security cooperation and supporting Somalia’s democratic transition.
Meeting at State House, Entebbe, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working together on regional security, governance reforms and long-term stability in the Horn of Africa.
President Mohamud thanked Uganda for its continued military support through the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), saying the contribution has helped Somalia make significant progress despite persistent security challenges.
“We are grateful for the security support that Uganda has continued to extend to Somalia. We are in a much better position today than we were before, although challenges remain,” he said.
The Somali leader also briefed President Museveni on his country’s ongoing political reforms, including efforts to restore universal suffrage after decades without direct elections. He said the reforms are intended to strengthen democratic governance and ensure Somalis determine their own future through the ballot.
President Museveni welcomed the reforms and reiterated Uganda’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s journey towards lasting peace and prosperity.
“For the last 19 years, we have stood with Somalia because we believe in supporting just causes and protecting innocent people. Our interest has always been to see Somalia become peaceful, stable and prosperous,” he said.
Museveni noted that durable peace depends on strong national institutions, inclusive governance and national unity, drawing parallels with Uganda’s own path to stability and development.
Both leaders agreed that closer cooperation among African countries remains critical in tackling regional security threats and promoting sustainable development across the Horn of Africa.
The meeting reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between Uganda and Somalia, with both governments pledging to deepen collaboration in pursuit of peace, security and shared prosperity.
