Stakeholders from the Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda Martyrs Housing and construction limited, Uganda peoples Defence Forces (UPDF), National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) have inspected the ongoing construction of security roads to assess the road works in progress.
The 3rd division Deputy Commander, Brigadier General Felix Busizoori, during the inspection on Friday, July 21, 2023, said that upon completion, the roads will enhance security, trade, tourism and inter-connectivity within the Karamoja sub region and across the border.
“Upon completion, the roads will enhance security, trade, tourism across the Karamoja sub region and across the border, which will steer up socio-economic transformation,” Brig Gen Busizoori said.
According to Moses Kinyera, the Engineer for Uganda Martyrs Housing and Construction Company limited, the two roads constructed under lot 2, have been opened and graveled as installations of culverts are ongoing.
“The two roads include 1: Simyu-MAGOS-Naput (55.06KM) and Kobebe-Naput (26.55KM), 2: Kobebe-Kalongolemuge-Nakapelimoru (33.009KM, 3: Contracted under Lot 1; covers (138KM) Nakiiloro-Naput-Kotein-Kotein-Loyoro (88KM), Loyoro-Lopedoo(50KMM) under NEC,” Kinyera said.
Bright Kwesiga, the Assistant Site Engineer NEC, Road three is still at progressive opening and forming road bed stage.
“The three road works are part of the boarder 250KMs which government promised to rehabilitate and improve Karamoja security roads in order to curb down insecurity and cattle rustling in the region FY/2021/2022,” Kwesiga said.
This follows the ground breaking ceremony of the security roads in Karamoja sub region that was launched in February 2023, by the Minister of State for Transport, Fred Byamukama and the Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs, Agnes Nandutu alongside other senior officials at Sinyu-Kobebe road junction in Napak District.
Present at the inspection were officials from Ministry of Works and Transport, 405 Brigade Commander, Officials from the National Enterprise Corporation and officers from the 3rd Division.
