Police in Kampala have raised concern over a growing wave of social media impersonation scams following the arrest of three suspects accused of posing as the country’s top police officer online.

The suspects identified as Ariho Abubakar Uthmaan, Bukenya Fayim, and Kaweesi Dalton were arrested on Tuesday, 24th March 2026 and are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station on allegations of personation.

According to Racheal Kawala, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, the trio allegedly created fake social media accounts impersonating Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba and used them to solicit money from unsuspecting members of the public and even police officers.

A search conducted at the suspects residences reportedly led to the recovery of electronic devices and documents believed to have been used in the scheme.

Authorities warned that impersonation tactics are evolving and urged the public to remain vigilant.

“Criminals are becoming more innovative, they study communication patterns, replicate official language, and create convincing profiles,” Kawala said.

Authorities are advising the public stop sending money based on social media requests, even if the account appears to belong to a senior official.

Police have since encouraged the public to report suspicious accounts and messages.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the operation and the number of victims affected.
